It is with great sadness that BPSC have to inform you of the passing of our most senior swimmer, Michael Clarke, following a short illness.
Michael, 80, had been a member of the club since its formation in 2010 and prior to that was a member of one of our predecessor clubs. He joined Basildon & District Swimming Club in 1997 and, following a short spell in the Masters teaching lanes, progressed to training and occasionally competing in Masters competition.
An international hurdler in his youth, Michael continued to mentor talented young athletes right up until his passing.
BPSC knows that many members may wish to attend the funeral; we will share details of the arrangements as soon as they are known. We remain in contact with Michael’s friends and family.
Yesterday, Basildon & Phoenix Masters won top the ‘Top Club’ Award at the Essex County ASA Masters Championships for the first time in the club’s history. This news would have brought Michael great joy.
We can therefore think of no more fitting tribute than to dedicate this latest club victory to Michael, in his memory and in celebration of a life well-lived.
